Italy’s largest agrivoltaic plant opens in Catania

A new 227 MW agrivoltaic plant has been inaugurated in Catania, Sicily, combining solar energy production with agricultural activity on the same land.

Developed by Nadara with support from Amazon, the Big Fish project is the largest agrivoltaic installation in Italy. It covers approximately 400 hectares across 15 plots in the municipalities of Catania, Lentini and Motta Sant’Anastasia.

The plant was built in just 12 months, involving more than 900 workers. Over its expected 35-year operating life, it is projected to generate enough renewable electricity to avoid approximately 3 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent compared with fossil-fuel generation.

The project also includes a significant package of local investments. The municipalities in the area are expected to benefit from at least €17.25 million in services and funding for energy efficiency, including infrastructure upgrades, monitoring systems for public buildings and electric vehicles for local administrations.

The environmental programme extends beyond the energy infrastructure itself. Big Fish includes the planting of 38,000 trees and the maintenance of 2.5 kilometres of public waterways.

For Nadara, the project reflects an approach to renewable energy that seeks to connect large-scale power generation with local economic and environmental benefits.

“The greatest contribution Nadara can make to tackling climate change is to produce increasing amounts of renewable energy, and this impact must be felt at global, national, regional and local level,” said Jorge Martinez, Chief Growth Officer at Nadara.

Amazon, which describes itself as Italy’s largest corporate buyer of carbon-free energy, has also highlighted the project's community dimension.

“We want to support projects that contribute to the energy transition while also creating positive outcomes for the communities around them,” said Giorgio Busnelli, Amazon’s Country Manager for Italy. “Big Fish does both.”

Big Fish illustrates the growing role of agrivoltaics in Italy’s renewable energy landscape, where solar generation is being integrated with agricultural land and broader territorial objectives.
